Converting oven temperatures
Recipes come from all over, so the same heat gets written four different ways: Celsius, Fahrenheit, UK gas marks, and fan (convection) settings. Celsius to Fahrenheit is (°C × 9/5) + 32. Gas marks follow a set scale — gas mark 4 is 180°C (350°F), the classic "moderate oven". And a fan oven runs hotter for the same dial, so the rule is to set a fan oven about 20°C lower than a conventional one to get the same result.
Type a temperature, pick what unit it's given in, and this converter shows all four at once — including the fan-oven equivalent so your bake doesn't overcook.
Common oven temperatures
- Gas 2 = 150°C = 300°F (slow) · Gas 4 = 180°C = 350°F (moderate)
- Gas 6 = 200°C = 400°F (moderately hot) · Gas 7 = 220°C = 425°F (hot)
- For a fan oven, set about 20°C lower than the conventional Celsius figure.
Frequently asked questions
What is gas mark 4 in °C and °F?
Gas mark 4 is 180°C or 350°F — the standard "moderate oven" used in a huge number of recipes.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply the Celsius figure by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 180°C × 9/5 + 32 = 356°F (usually rounded to 350°F).
Should I lower the temperature for a fan oven?
Yes — a fan (convection) oven cooks hotter, so set it about 20°C lower than a conventional oven for the same result.
