Accounts and tools to hit your goal faster:

How long will it take to save?

The basic version is simple: subtract what you've already saved from your goal, then divide by your monthly deposit to get the number of months. Add interest and it gets a little more generous — each month your balance earns a small return that also compounds, so you reach the goal a bit sooner. This calculator runs the month-by-month build-up, including interest if you enter a rate, and tells you the time to goal, how much is left, and how much of the total came from interest.

Enter your goal, current savings, monthly deposit, and (optionally) an annual interest rate.

A worked example

Goal of $10,000, with $2,000 saved and $400 a month put away: you need another $8,000, which at $400 a month takes 20 months — about 1 year and 8 months. A little interest shortens that further.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate months to a savings goal?

Subtract your current savings from the goal, then divide by your monthly deposit. Interest, if any, gets you there slightly faster.

Does this account for interest?

Yes — enter an annual rate and it compounds monthly, reducing the time to reach your goal. Leave it at 0 to ignore interest.
