How to turn a score into a percentage and grade

The percentage is just the points you earned divided by the total, times 100. From there, a letter grade comes from the standard grading scale (90%+ is an A, 80s a B, and so on). This calculator shows both, plus how many points you dropped — handy for seeing how close you were to the next grade up.

Enter the points earned and the total. It works for a test, an assignment, or any "x out of y" score.

A worked example

43 out of 50 is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%, which is a B on the standard scale, with 7 points lost. Bump that to 45/50 and you'd hit 90% — an A− — so you were just two marks away.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a grade percentage?

Divide points earned by total points and multiply by 100. For example, 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%.

What letter grade is my percentage?

On the common scale: 90%+ = A, 80s = B, 70s = C, 60s = D, below 60% = F. Schools vary, especially on +/− bands.

Can I use this for any test size?

Yes — any "points earned out of total" works, whether it's out of 20, 50, 100, or anything else.
