The percentage is just the points you earned divided by the total, times 100. From there, a letter grade comes from the standard grading scale (90%+ is an A, 80s a B, and so on). This calculator shows both, plus how many points you dropped — handy for seeing how close you were to the next grade up.

A worked example
43 out of 50 is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%, which is a B on the standard scale, with 7 points lost. Bump that to 45/50 and you'd hit 90% — an A− — so you were just two marks away.
Common grade scale
- A 90–100% · B 80–89% · C 70–79% · D 60–69% · F below 60%
- Many schools add +/− bands (e.g. 87–89% = B+). Check your school's exact scale.
