How to calculate a weighted grade
A weighted grade accounts for the fact that different parts of a course count for different amounts. Multiply each category's grade by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total weight. If your weights add up to 100%, the division is by 100; if you've only entered some categories so far, the tool divides by the weight you've entered, giving your grade "so far".
Add a row for each category — homework, quizzes, midterm, final, participation — with its grade and how much it's worth, and the calculator keeps a running weighted grade and letter.
A worked example
Homework 90% (weight 20%), quizzes 85% (weight 30%), and a midterm 78% (weight 50%). Weighted grade = (90×20 + 85×30 + 78×50) ÷ 100 = 82.5%.
Tips
- Get weights from your syllabus — they should add up to 100% for the full course.
- Leave out categories you haven't done yet to see your current standing, then add them once graded.
- Pair this with the final grade calculator to see what you still need on what's left.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my weighted grade?
Multiply each category's grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. This tool updates it as you type.
Do the weights have to add up to 100?
For a full-course grade, yes. If they add to less, the calculator shows your grade based on what's entered so far.
What's the difference between weighted grade and GPA?
A weighted grade averages categories within one course by weight; GPA averages your grades across courses by credit hours.
