How to calculate a tip and split a bill

A tip is a percentage of the bill: multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. Add that to the bill for the total, then divide the total by the number of people to see what each person owes. This calculator does all three at once, so you're not fumbling with your phone's basic calculator at the table.

Typical tipping varies by country and service — around 15–20% is common in the US, while in many other countries a smaller tip or none at all is normal. Enter whatever percentage fits.

A worked example

An $80 bill with a 15% tip: the tip is $12, making the total $92. Split four ways, that's $23 each. Bump the tip to 20% and it's $24 per person.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For a 15% tip on $80, that's $80 × 15 ÷ 100 = $12.

How much should I tip?

It varies by country. Around 15–20% is common in the US; elsewhere a smaller tip or none is normal. Use whatever percentage suits the situation.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Customs differ, but many people tip on the pre-tax bill. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.
